An apple grower is hoping to tap into the 200th celebrations of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Peter and Julia van Tongeren, pioneers of a special sun-branding technique developed in the USA and Japan, are supplying Mill Orchard’s farm shop with special apples displaying an anchor logo.

The fruit is applied with a pre-design sticker while the apple is still on the tree.

As it ripens and turns red, the sun imprints the logo onto the apple’s skin during the last ten weeks of growth. The couple use the Falstaff variety of apple because of its colouring.

Peter van Tongeren said: “The anchor apples were designed with Trafalgar in mind but are just as suitable for any nautical themed event.”

He is planning on selling the apples in boxes of ten with commemorative packaging.
