Environmental consultancy Adas is conducting research for Defra into the calculation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the food supply chain. The work is part of Defra’s consultation process as it looks to develop a Publicly Available Specification (PAS).

The carbon footprint is worked out by calculating GHG outputs at all stages in the chain. Every food product has an impact on the environment and GHGs are calculated at each stage of the food supply chain from production and its inputs through to the final product.

It is Defra’s and the Carbon Trust’s aim to develop a robust, consistent approach for measuring GHGs and to come up with a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) which organisations can use to calculate and target where GHG emission reductions can be made for the products that they manufacture, buy or sell.

Adas was appointed earlier this month to the two-phase project that will test and apply the approach. Campden & Chorleywood Food Research Association, Cranfield University, the EuGeos environmental consultancy and the Institute of Grassland & Environmental Research are also involved.
