More than half of consumers believe major food businesses are “only playing at being green”, according to new research from supply-chain consultancy Ab Sustain.

Almost 80 per cent of those polled by researchers last month are demanding that more retailers and producers commit to tackling climate change.

Johanna Buitelaar Warden, business development manager at AB Sustain told freshinfo: “Our research shows that despite the recession, consumers still care about the green credentials of what they buy, so smart fresh-produce companies should be tapping into this. A strong sustainability programme can even help alleviate some of the economic pressures on fresh produce firms during the recession, by introducing more efficient systems and practices.”

She added that there is “ real enthusiasm for sustainability in the fresh produce sector” and that companies have a thirst for understanding best practice and doing “more on a number of different levels, from water, fuel and waste to CO2 reduction”.
