5 A DAY results encourage

The eighth annual Consumer Attitudes to Food survey published this week by the Food Standards Agency has found awareness of 5 A DAY is highest in the south-east of England than in any other part of the country, while Northern Ireland lags furthest behind on 5 A DAY intake.

The survey found that 79 per cent of consumers in the England are now aware that they should be eating at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables each day and a growing number are also claiming to be putting this into practice. However Londoners are significantly more likely than any other region to be eating at least 5 A DAY with 73 per cent claiming to have done so on the previous day compared with just 47 per cent of those living in the North West of England.

The survey found that 45 per cent of people in Northern Ireland eat five or more pieces of fruit and veg each day. This is compared to 59 per cent in England, 54 per cent in Scotland and 50 per cent in Wales.

Andrew Wadge, chief scientist at the Food Standards Agency, commented: “This most recent survey is encouraging as it shows the majority of people in do realise how important it is to eat healthily, and many are also savvy when it comes to shopping around and checking labels.”
