Israeli breeding specialist Zeraim Gedera has unveiled its latest addition to its tomato line-up - an Elongated variety.

The elongated fruits, developed by Amit Shiftan, adapt well to different climatic conditions and are ideal for cooking as well as for fresh consumption, according to the company. The fruits are firm, have a high dry matter content and a deep red colour.

Shai Leviatov, head of the tomato breeding team at Zeraim Gedera, said: “This new, superb programme began in response to significant consumer demand for a tomato that remains firm and does not crush after cooking or slicing. It represents the company’s vision of contributing to the health, nutritional quality and joy of consumers.”

The company has recruited well-known Israeli chef Eyal Shani to its Fruit Logistica stand this year, to cook and serve meals using Zeraim Gedera tomato and pepper varieties.
