Zeraim Gedera, a leading seed breeding company, and Evogene, a biotechnology company focused on developing high-value agricultural commercial products based on plant genomics, have launched a project to enhance the development of a new tomato resistant to soil and water salinity conditions.

This has prompted Zeraim Gedera to invest US$150,000 in Evogene, marking Zeraim's new strategy to participate in biotechnology activities for developing non-transgenic new hybrid varieties of vegetables, notably tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicums and melons. Zeraim Gedera, established in 1952, now has three production and R&D centres: Zeraim Gedera Ltd in Israel; Zeraim Iberica SA in Spain, and Zeraim Hong Kong Ltd.

The subsidiary in Spain supplies farmers with tomato and capsicum seeds and the Hong Kong outlet is engaged in supplying seeds to farmers in China and South East Asia.
