Yorkshire cherry tomatoes have made their debut for the season on Asda shelves.

The tomatoes have been produced by Yorkshire grower Chris Durnford, a second-generation tomato grower based at Cottingham, near Hull. The family-run business was established in the late 1960s by his father, Peter Durnford.

English Village Salads, part of the Bakkavor group, has worked with the grower, which has been supplying Asda with tomatoes since the early 1990s, initially growing traditional round tomatoes before widening its varietal range.

The move reflects Asda’s stated commitment to retailing and supporting regionally and locally grown food as it looks to cater to consumer trends.

Shaun Grey, produce manager at Asda’s Kingswood store in Hull, said: “More and more of our customers are telling us they want to be able to buy local fruit and vegetables where possible, so we’re delighted to be able to give them the chance to buy not only British tomatoes, but those which are grown locally in Yorkshire.”
