The World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) is seeking submissions for its first set of global wholesale market awards.
The three award categories will cover innovation, environmental sustainability, and bonds with communities.
Markets may enter more than one category.
The winners will be announced during the 26th WUWM congress opening dinner, to be held in the Copenhagen, October 1.
The Market Innovation award will recognise markets that have introduced initiatives to support and improve the market’s construction, management and organisation, including the market’s marketing and promotions, increased competitiveness, finances, trader support, and technical infrastructure, as well as food safety.
The Environmental Sustainability honour will recognise excellence in green activities and sustainability, intended for those that have introduced a programme, service or specific equipment to demonstrably improve the environmental impact of the market. This could relate to issues including waste management, hygiene standards, energy efficiency, infrastructure, transportation, recycling, heating, sewerage and landfill reduction.
The Community Support gong will award markets that effectively supportive of their local community, either socially or economically. This can include to healthy eating schemes, increased support for small and medium-sized businesses, education initiatives, tourism, and improved community cohesion.
The submissions will be reviewed by a five-strong panel of judges, including Dr John Mann, retired Superintendent of Smithfield Market in London; Edward Seidler, agricultural marketing officer at the Food and Agriculture Organisation; Steve Davies, senior vice-president at the Project for Public Spaces in New York; Bruno Christensen, chief executive of the Retail Institute Scandinavia, in Denmark; and WUWM secretary general Maria Cavit.
