The Barcelona municipal markets institute IMMB has won the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) gold award 2012 for its refurbishment of the Mercat de la Llibertat.
The awards were announced at the closing dinner of the WUWM conference in Poland on Friday.
Judges were impressed with the refurbishment model in Barcelona because it met the needs of the commercial sector as well as those of local residents and district services so that the market became an engine for commercial growth and neighbourhood transformation.
Shenzhen HiGreen wholesale market in China won the silver award.
Three certificates of merit were also awarded to Mercacórdba, also in Spain, Rungis in Paris and to Seoul Agricultural & Marine Products Corporation in South Korea.
