Writtle introduces part-time postharvest course

A postgraduate course at Writtle College has been revised to attract more part-time students, following requests from the trade.

The MSc in Postharvest Technology, which has been run since 1998, will now include a postgraduate certificate programme.

The certificate course is led by Dr Chris Bishop, who heads the Postharvest Unit at Writtle College.

The programme allows students to study the techniques used for postharvest handling of horticultural crops and the mechanisms that determine and limit the technologies, as well as developing a thorough knowledge of the produce business environment and evaluating trends.

Applicants are likely to be employed within the postharvest sector or within the industry, and will normally have experience of higher education, such as a BSc, FdSc or HND, or have extensive industry experience.

Teaching methods include lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials, visits, case studies and student-managed learning.

Bishop said: “We think that this new course will be of interest to those who are looking for a higher level qualification - either as the complete certificate, or for specific modules as part of their continuing professional development programme.

“The course can be taken one day a week over a two-year period and will provide the opportunity to enhance the technical knowledge of the participants who can then apply it in their everyday jobs.”
