The MSc International Horticulture students at Writtle College

British Sugar TOPSOIL has played host to 60 Writtle College students at its site in Wissington, Norfolk. As part of a jam-packed schedule, the students first attended a lecture by Andy Spetch from British Sugar TOPSOIL on the make up of soils, the importance of specifying topsoil for landscape projects and the controls in place to ensure the quality of TOPSOIL products.

The students were also given a guided tour of the topsoil operations on site and further practical demonstrations during the tour showed good practice in relation to the handling and storage of soils on site.

The students also visited British Sugar Group’s Cornerways Nursery and its tomato growing facility in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. The huge glasshouse complex uses waste heat and carbon dioxide from the beet processing plant to provide British grown tomatoes all year round.

This year the MSc International Horticulture scheme at Writtle College attracted 29 students from 20 different countries, including China, Ethiopia, Ghana, Jamaica and Nepal who have an interest in the international trade of fresh produce and post-harvest issues. The majority of the students enrolled on the course will also spend part of their course at the college’s partner college Has Den Bosch in the Netherlands. Due to this success, the college plans to add a more general masters course in horticulture in 2008.
