Writtle campus

Writtle will be known as Writtle College University from September 2016

Writtle College has been awarded University College status and will change its name to Writtle University College from August of this year.

It comes as the Chelmsford-based college was granted with a licence that means it can provide its own degree courses, meaning it no longer awards University of Essex-validated degrees.

College principal Stephen Waite said: “This is a magnificent achievement and I am absolutely delighted with the outcome. Not only for ourselves, but also for the city of Chelmsford and the county of Essex as it will further enhance the profile of education within the region.

“It represents the successful culmination of a long arduous process that has involved the efforts of many colleagues. This recognition reflects our ambition as a high-quality provider of Further and Higher Education.”

“We already have a fantastic track record of producing high-profile and award-winning alumni who go on to achieve great things in their chosen industry. I am very excited about the future for Writtle.”

Chair of governors Julia Smith hailed the news as a “milestone” in Writtle’s history. “I would also like to congratulate and thank all of our colleagues, staff and fellow Governors on this fantastic achievement. Writtle has a very bright future,' she said.

Writtle will receieve its final intake of students for degrees validated by the University of Essex this September.
