Companies that do not familiarise themselves face problems

The Freight Transport Association has warned vehicle operators that the implementation of new Working Time Directive regulations next March could be a huge a spanner in the works for companies that aren't properly prepared.

The government itself estimates that the new rules will cost the road transport industry over £1 billion and reduce productivity by 10 per cent. This autumn, operators can learn how to minimise the impact at FTA's one-day Transport Manager 2004 seminars, being held between September and December at locations throughout the country.

At present, the new regulations will restrict working hours to an average of 48 per week and although FTA is continuing to try and negotiate a staggered introduction, no company will be left unaffected by these changes.

FTA's working time experts will guide attendees, in the first session, through the legislation, how drivers and operators will be affected, how to calculate the 48 hour week and clarify what periods of availability will actually mean. Session two will focus on how to comply with the legislation while remaining competitive.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to put their own questions directly to those FTA experts in a working time surgery at the end of each seminar.

Details of the seminars are as follows:

• September 22 - Gatwick

• September 29 - Warrington

• October 6 - Cardiff

• October 13 - Belfast

• October 19 - Warwick

• October 28 - Grangemouth

• November 3 - Leeds

• November 9 - Cambridge

• November 17 - Weston-super-Mare

• November 24 - Worksop

• December 1 - Heathrow

• December 8 - Durham
