'Wonky veg' to be harvested for charities

The event at Geoff Philpott’s farm in Broadstairs, Kent, is organised by Tristram Stuart, organiser of the Feeding the 5000 campaign.

MP for South Thanet, Laura Sandys ,will attend the event, which takes place between 10.30am and 2.30pm Saturday 3 March.

Redistribution charity FareShare is also involved and will help distribute the cabbages to a range of charities.

Tristram Stuart said: “Thousands of tonnes of fresh produce remain unharvested in UK’s farms every year, either because they don’t meet the strict retail cosmetic standards or because of overproduction. Even small amounts of these crops could help feed thousands of people.”

This is one of a series of pilot events organised by the Feeding the 5000 campaign.

Stuart hopes to energise what he calls a Gleaning Network to coordinate volunteers, growers, and distribution charities to salvage unwanted produce.
