Amid high food prices and concern about sustainable food, a new National Trust initiative launches today, challenging urbanites to transform their windowsills into beautiful vegetable gardens.

People living in the UK’s five million flats have the biggest challenge finding space to grow food at home, but there are more than 600 acres of growing space available on windowsills in the UK.

Potential home growers are encouraged to try their luck with vegetables ranging from lettuce to exotic produce such as creeping rosemary.

Fiona Reynolds, director general of the National Trust, said: “We have got the equivalent of 344 football pitches worth of growing space right on our windowsills. Growing ‘window food’ is an easy way to ensure your vegetables are local and bursting with flavour.”

In order to spearhead the Window Food project, more than 300 hundred special events are taking place from now until October 2099, where National Trust experts will offer growing advice and free seeds around the country.
