The fresh produce industry's link to the annual Wimbledon tennis championships has always been the traditional strawberries and cream snack.
But cucumber growers have reportedly doubled the amount of crops they have planted this year, with one of the reasons being a surge in demand for cucumber as an accompaniment for the Pimm's alcoholic drink.
A spokesperson for the Cucumber Growers Association, said: “The cucumber growers of England have seen an increase in demand every year for our fresh and juicy cucumbers. Demand has become so great, that our members have had to re-plant their crops in April and May to ensure there are enough high-quality fresh English cucumbers available for the increased demand during Wimbledon fortnight.
“With the humble cucumber being an integral part of British summer, from the cucumber sandwich to the refreshing jug of Pimm’s, we have ensured our cucumbers growers can keep up with demand and make sure no one is disappointed.”
