The Spitalfields Infant School building in Sichuan Province, China

Fresh produce traders in London have helped build a school in the Sichuan area of China that was devastated by an 8.0 magnitude earthquake.

In May 2008, 70,000 people were killed, 18,000 people went missing and at least 15 million people were affected by the Sichuan Earthquake on 12 May, 2008.

To help raise money for the China Children and Teenagers’ Fund (CCTF), New Spitalfields Market Tenants' Association, Sunnyfield Veg and CooksDelights organised a Gourmet Gala at New Spitalfields Market back in June 2009.

They raised £45,000 and now, nearly three years later, the Spitalfields Infant School Building has been built. The school has a total of 420 students, 160 of which board at the school.

Ronny Liu, director of Sunnyfield Veg and Cooks Delights, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thanks each and all the donators, the participants, without all of you, this school will not happen and the infant will not have the playground and the school that they deserved.”
