The report also recommends working with retailers and other links in the supply chain to make affordable fresh produce available to low-income groups as well as developing local community initiatives such as school fruit tuck shops.

Research has found that the health of people living in Wales in consistently worse than for those living over the border in England, where the national government has recently taken on initiatives such as five-a-day and the school fruit scheme to boost consumption of fresh produce among the population.

'My key priority for Food and Wellbeing is to enable the achievement of a healthier diet for the whole of the population of Wales and to reduce food poverty and inequalities in health,' said Ms Hutt.
