Growers Pat and Nick Bean began supplying the supermarket’s Swansea store with the vegetable grown on their Springfield Farm near Tenbyon Monday.

The asparagus, which is wrapped in a special Welsh logo, is ready two weeks earlier this season than usual due to the warmest April for 300 years.

“We normally sell at farmers’ markets and local outlets but we are delighted to be selling through Asda,” said Pat Bean. “We are only supplying one store because we want to start in a small way and build from there.

“We have around three to four acres of asparagus on land which overlooks the sea. The vegetable seems to thrive in the fresh air from the Atlantic Ocean and the mild winters we get help produce a quality crop.”

The asparagus, which costs £1.68 per bunch, will be available in the Swansea store until the middle of June.
