The deadline has been extended for HTA members who have not yet acted upon the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations that came into force on January 2 2007.

Members now have until the end of March to take advantage of discounted rates and join the HTA Valpack Distributor Take-back Scheme (DTS).

Those who have not joined a DTS will face new legal obligations making them responsible for the storage, transport and recycling of WEEE from their customers (private households and businesses). Some or all of these activities may require a waste management licence.

By joining the HTA/Valpack scheme, retailers will be exempt from in-store take-back and prosecution until December 2009. After March the cost of joining the DTS will double.
