Wealmoor is celebrating a second year of success, taking the BA World Cargo Importer of the Year title at this year’s Re:fresh awards.
The Hayes-based importer proved it is one of the leading companies in its field by winning the title for the second consecutive year.
The judges were impressed by Wealmoor’s philosophy that it is only by adding value to its products and services, particularly at source, that importers can remain relevant in the current market.
The company has undertaken a number of key initiatives over the last few years, which included being one of the first to introduce near infra-red technology to assess the internal condition of fruit as well as carrying out successful commercial trials to transfer a great deal of UK handling to source to reduce costs and maintain growers returns.
On top of this, Wealmoor has been one of the first to experiment with sulphur free alternatives to maintain shelf life of fruit such as lychees and it is developing its own new mango varieties at its farms in Gambia.
Avnish Malde, commercial director, collecting the award, made an impassioned speech telling the guests the industry should be proud of the employment it provides to thousands of people, both directly and indirectly, around the world.
