Watton in Boots with mini cues

Watton Produce Company (WPC) has extended its healthy snack-pack range by introducing a 110g Ready-to-Eat Mini Cucumber Crunchies snack pot with a yoghurt and mint dip.

It was launched this week under the Shapers brand in Boots Stores - retailing at £1.00.

The specially bred, one-bite, sweet and crunchy mini- cues were originally introduced by Stubbins Marketing through Somerfield as a trial last year.

Subsequently Stubbins has joined forces with WPC, which is now creating the finished product at its Norfolk factory, and acting as marketing agent.

“The snack pack is a response to the consumer demand for fresh and convenient healthy snacking and adds a fantastic new product to the marketplace,” said Katy Negus, sales manager for WPC.

“In recent years with the commercial development of new colours, sizes, shapes and tastes for other salad lines, such as tomatoes, peppers and lettuce, the cucumber has remained the poor relation.

“Sales of classic cucumbers have remained virtually static and although there has been the introduction of the midi, baby and even some Asiatic types, nothing has captured the consumer’s interest sufficiently to establish any of them as a part of the salad catalogue.”

Stubbins has chosen to grow the traditional small Mediterranean type with a pale green/yellow colouration. It has high levels of dry matter, which allow for six days shelf life.

“Taste panels have always confirmed the preference for our classic cucumber with a mildly sweet and fresh flavour, little seed formation and a thin, edible skin,” said Negus.

“In one small package, the mini cucumber meets all these criteria and a little more.”
