Courgettes shaped like miniature water-melons were on display at Fruit Logistica in Berlin last week.
Growers Fratelli Giampa developed the produce, called Geodeo, which are green descendants of a vegetable that normally grows long and large and has a diameter of just five or six centimetres.
“They contain virtually no seeds and are very aromatic,” said a spokesman.
This new variety of vegetable is grown in the Calabria region of Italy and the first harvest produced between 20 and 30 tonnes. The producers reported that they cost around 1.50 euros per kilo, and are more expensive than the traditional long variety.
