Water pollution problem to be tackled

The harmful effects of agricultural pollution on plants, fish and the water environment will be addressed by a series of new measures to be announced on Monday, December 19.

Farmers in 40 priority areas across England - including nine in Norfolk and Suffolk covering over 8,000 square kms - will be offered help with a range of actions aimed at improving farm practices and reducing water pollution.

The run-off of pesticides and fertilisers from agricultural land can have a serious impact on local rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal waters, harming plants and fish, and affecting tourism by reducing the quality of bathing water at beaches.

You are invited to send a reporter to a press briefing with environment minister Elliot Morley, Sir John Harman of the environment agency, Sir Martin Doughty of Natural England, and Peter Kendall of the NFU, as well as representatives from other partner organisations.
