The National Farmers Union has signed an accord with the Environment Agency and Water UK - the industry association that represents all UK water and wastewater service suppliers at national and European level - with the aim of helping growers and farmers meet the likely targets due to be set by the EU water framework directive.

“I am happy to announce that our three diverse organisations will work in partnership to prepare farmers and growers for changes in established practices that stem from the WFD,” said NFU president Tim Bennett.

The three organizations have already identified seven priorities including: incentives for farmers and growers and their engagement in the development process; a new classification system; an improved monitoring and research base, particularly for diffuse pollution from land and locally based catchment advisers.
