New site will have sustainability and efficiency at its heart
Walsh Mushrooms is planning a £10 million state-of-the-art mushroom-growing facility in Worcestershire.
The Irish-owned group made the announcement at the UK-Ireland summit in Liverpool on 6 March, which was attended by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
Walsh Mushrooms Group is one of the largest suppliers of fresh mushrooms across Ireland and the UK, and outlined the major five-year investment project to develop the new growing facility near its distribution centre in Evesham.
The company said the investment represents its “commitment to be at the forefront of mushroom production, whilst recognising the challenges ahead, particularly with labour”.
The site is set to integrate world-leading robotic technology to enhance operational efficiency, streamline processes and significantly reduce labour and energy requirements.
The facility will be powered by sustainable energy sources, which the company said reinforces its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting environmental responsibility. Construction will begin next month, with an initial investment of £10mn, and the facility is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Director Alan Walsh, who attended the London event, said: “After a lot of research, development and planning this is the biggest step change for the mushroom industry in over two decades. This investment underscores Walsh Mushrooms Group’s dedication to innovation, sustainability and expanding its capacity to meet the growing demand of our customers for high-quality British mushrooms”.
