Waitrose has taken top place when it comes to the promotion of healthy eating, according to the National Consumer Council.
According to a survey, Waitrose, Sainsbury and the Co-op topped the chart, while Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Somerfield all performed poorly.
The NCC Health Responsibility Index assessed the retailers on a range of criteria, including whether there were in-store promotions of healthy food such as fruit and veg, how clear labelling was and also the availability and quality of in-store information on healthy eating.
Deirdre Hutton, chair of the NCC, said: “It’s worrying that we found retailers with a high proportion of lower income shoppers appearing to reinforce the health inequalities between rich and poor.”
