Waitrose will launch its first grocery convenience store early next year, according to The Independent.

Consultant Anthony Wysome, a former senior project manager at the upmarket retailer, has been hired as head of convenience, in a bid to take advantage of the £27.4 billion convenience retail market.

The move will see Waitrose enter battle against Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local and M&S Simply Food.

A Waitrose spokeswoman said: “We would hope to be trialling a shop within six to nine months.”

The stores are likely to be sized between 3,000sqft and 4,000sqft.

The convenience store plans follow the launch in May of Waitroses’s first market-town stores, sized around 13,000sqft. There are now two stores in the country, with a third to open next week. The concept focuses on fresh food and local produce.
