Waitrose squares up to Whole Foods

Whole Foods Market is under investigation by trading standards officials after Waitrose lodged a complaint against the US organic retailer.

According to The Sunday Times, the complaint relates to the way Whole Foods defines local produce as food sourced from anywhere in the UK. Waitrose is also believed to be concerned about labelling. A report summarising the findings of Kensington & Chelsea officials is expected to be made public in the next couple of weeks.

David Doctorow, vice-president of Whole Foods, hit back at the criticism. He said: “Part of our mission and core culture is to support local agriculture. But we don’t have a strict definition of local - that is up to our customers. We give them the name of the product and where it is from so they can make their own decisions.”
