Waitrose has reported a sales increase of 11 per cent for the first half of 2013, with sales exceeding £3 billion.

The retailer, which now accounts for nearly five per cent of the UK grocery retail market, said its sales growth over the six months (ending July 27) came in ahead of the market. The announcement of the half-year sales is in line with Waitrose's 11.1 per cent growth in first-quarter sales, with the retailer praising the impact of itsonline groceriesservice.

'We have achieved sales growth that has been significantly and consistently ahead of the market - indeed, we have now outperformed the market for more than four years in a row,' said Waitrose managing director Mark Price.

Price, who was recently announced as the new deputy chairman for UK television's Channel 4, also revealed that sales were up 4.1 per cent to £115m last week.

More details of Waitrose' half-year performance are expected to be published in September.
