Waitrose rolls on over Christmas

Waitrose kept on its recent roll over the Christmas period, and has reported a solid trading period, while many of its high street rivals struggle to maintain momentum.

The up-market chain, owned by the John Lewis Partnership, saw its sales jump 6.1 per cent in the five weeks to January 5, ahead of the predicted results of both M&S and Sainsbury’s [freshinfo, yesterday].

John Lewis Partnership chairman Charlie Mayfield singled out the performance of Waitrose for praise, “particularly in the context of the demanding conditions we faced”. Sales across the John Lewis group were 6.2 up over the five-week period.
