Waitrose md backs Competition Commission report

Waitrose managing director Mark Price has said he supports the Competition Commission’s provisional report “without hesitation”, but admitted there are “tweaks that could be made”.

He responded to the report at the English Farming & Food Partnerships' conference yesterday. He said: “I read the Competition Commission's report and had meetings this morning. Broadly speaking, we think it's a good thing, with more choice for consumers moving forward.

“Suppliers are being treated by and large in a fair way, and it's a competitive market. There are tweaks that could be made in terms of planning and land banks, but we support the points the report has made without hesitation.”

The retailer has also issued a statement on the report: “We welcome the findings and believe the Competition Commission has identified a number of reasonable remedies for addressing the current issues in the sector, particularly in the interests of customer choice.”
