Waitrose will trial its first convenience store later this year.

The retailer confirmed that its first c-store will open in Trinity Square, Nottingham on December 11. It will be just under 6,000 sq ft in surface area. Plans are for a focus on fresh produce and specialist service to help it stand out from other convenience retailers. The chain also plans to open another three c-stores by spring 2009.

This initiative comes hot on the heels of the Waitrose market-town format stores, the first of which opened its doors in St Neots, Cambridgeshire in May. It has a focus on locally sourced produce and a smaller store footprint than standard Waitrose supermarkets.
