Cucamelon II

Waitrose shoppers can now grow at home a new type of plant called the cucamelon.

Launching at Waitrose in what is referring to as a supermarket first, the plant bears cucamelons, which look like tiny grape-sized watermelons, but taste like a cucumber.

They reportedly have a refreshing citrus-like flavour, and are suited to being sliced in a cocktail, served as a nibble, eaten as you would an olive, or added to salads as a zesty alternative to cucumber.

The versatile plants can be grown easily and in the same way as a regular cucumber plant. There is no need for the cover of a greenhouse as long as there isn’t a risk of frost, and Waitrose has noted that they are perfect for beginners venturing into the world of gardening.

Cucamelon plants are available exclusively at Waitrose, and have been grown by Suttons Seeds in Yorkshire. They are part of a range of vegetable plants by James Wong, the Kew-trained botanist, science writer, broadcaster and author of the book Homegrown Revolution.

Victoria Mason, Waitrose outdoor plant buyer, said: 'We know that, after cooking, gardening is our customers’ favourite hobby, so we wanted to introduce something a little bit out of the ordinary that they can grow and enjoy.

“This fun fruit is easy to grow so is the perfect plant for all ages to try their hand at gardening. The new James Wong range shows you don't have to stick with the traditional when growing your own vegetables and offers some exciting new additions for our customers’ gardens.”
