Waitrose launches bread-less salad wrap

A fresh take on sandwiches held together with Cos and Romaine lettuce leaves rather than bread has been launched by UK premium retailer Waitrose.

The wraps and “boats” have been developed by the chain to create a lunch option that is easier to eat on the go than a salad.

The Cos lettuce wraps come in two flavours, Greek feta cheese and spiced chicken and mango, with extra fillings such as cucumber, red onion and red peppers for extra crunch and a separate dressing to keep the lettuce as crisp as possible.

The Romaine lettuce leaf boats come with sweet chilli chicken and rice noodle as well as oriental king prawn and rice noodle.

Waitrose nutritionist Joanne Lunn said: “They are an alternative to a sandwich and an easy way of eating salad on the go, because you eat them like a wrap. They’re really tasty and give you one of your recommended 5 A DAY portions of fruit or veg on the go.”

The lines form part of the new 150-strong Good to Go range, which mirrors the chain’s plans to open 300 convenience branches over the next decade as it makes a bid to double its share of the convenience market.

Waitrose managing director Mark Price said: “This marks another exciting milestone for our business and demonstrates our ambition to grow our convenience business. Good To Go gives us a fantastic opportunity to help our customers eat quality, innovative food on the move at a great price and strengthens our convenience business.”
