Waitrose is to sell pinks for the first time in 10 years, in response to growing demand for UK flowers.

The bloom, a smaller relative of the carnation renowned for its fragrance, will hit stores from July 14.

The retailer will stock six varieties of spicily-scented pinks from a speciality grower in Lincolnshire, including Gran's Favourite and Bright Eyes, which has pink flowers and a hot-pink centre.

Seasonal editions such as Devon General and Lily the Pink will also feature.

Sales of British blooms are up by 30 per cent year on year and, in the summer, British flowers make up 75 per cent of sales at Waitrose.

Louise Motala, Waitrose flower buyer, said: “Championed at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, pinks are a real symbol of the quintessential English summer. The decorative flowers have a superb scent, meaning shoppers can now enjoy the delights of the country garden from the comfort of their own living room.

“As with all our fresh produce, we are dedicated to sourcing our plants and flowers from the UK when they are naturally in season. This cuts the need for travel, and means flowers can often be picked one day and fresh in our stores the next,” she added.

Waitrose pinks will cost £3.99 for 16 stems.
