Waitrose Faitrade promise off to a flying start

Sales of Fairtrade products at Waitrose doubled during the first week of Fairtrade Fortnight.

The announcement comes just a week after the retailer pledged to increase sales of the ethical brand by 100 per cent in the coming year. The surge in sales is party attributed to the decision to switch to 100 per cent Fairtrade roses and bananas, with the removal of conventional equivalents, according to the chain.

Waitrose brand development manager Graham Cassie said: “This has been a fantastic start to Fairtrade Fortnight for us. It is clear that ethical sourcing is a serious consideration for shoppers - and rightly so. “We are confident that the momentum of FAIRTRADE Fortnight will continue throughout this year, as customers step-up their commitment to ensuring a fair deal for farming communities around the world.”
