David Jones is to begin work as Waitrose supply chain director at the end of the month.
Jones, who is currently the divisional registrar at parent group John Lewis, will take up the role on 31 August following a reshuffle within the group.
He takes the place of the retailer’s previous supply chain director, Mark Williamson, who became commercial director of the company in June.
Williamson had replaced Richard Hodgson, who went to Morrisons, a retailer in a period of flux following the appointment of new ceo Dalton Philips this year.
Jones joined John Lewis in 1982 and held several branch manager roles in Waitrose before moving to buying in 1994.
He became head of buying services in 2002 before moving to the corporate office as deputy partners’ counsellor in 2005, a key role within the democratic structure of the business.
He returned to Waitrose in 2007 as a director of buying for 18 months before his moving to his current role. As divisional registrar for John Lewis he represents all partners in the co-owned company.
He had also been an elected member of the John Lewis Partnership Board.
Mark Price, managing director of Waitrose said: “David’s deep understanding of our business and wide experience at senior level makes him ideally suited to this role. I am delighted that, once again, we have been able to draw on our own talent pool to fill this important position.”
