Plant breeder Rijk Zwaan has launched a new cucumber variety with resistance to mosaic virus.
The new product, 24-185 RZ, has high resistance to cucumber green mottle mosaic virus. It is being marketed to growers under the Rijk Zwaan BonDefense label which identifies those products that have high disease resistance.
Plants of the 24-185 RZ variety continue to grow normally when infected with mosaic virus, showing no or hardly any virus symptoms either in the plants or on the cucumbers, so that both quality and production remain good.
The virus also multiplies less quickly in the plant, so that spreading from plant to plant slows down considerably.
Rijk Zwaan expects to launch more varieties marketed under the BonDefense logo with resistance to mosaic virus soon.
The 24-185 RZ cue is suitable for summer and autumn growing and also has intermediate resistance to mildew.
