VI targets exceeded

The NFU has reported that targets to reduce the environmental impact of pesticides have been exceeded.

The targets, which were agreed with the government in 2001 in response to the threat of a pesticide tax, are part of the industry-led Voluntary Initiative.

Final results for 2006-7 show the national Sprayer Testing Scheme tested machines coving almost 90 percent of the sprayed area, the National Register of Sprayer Operators has 20,974 members responsible for around 85 percent of the arable area and Crop Protection Management Plans encompass 1.6m hectares.

Since its inception, the VI has set up three new groups to deal with water quality and aquatic biodiversity, terrestrial biodiversity and the communication of VI messages to farmers and their supporting industries.

The VI’s chairman, Professor Barry Dent, said: “The VI has shown what can be achieved through voluntary measures, and I am pleased its valuable contribution to the National Pesticide Strategy and the implementation of the Water Framework Directive is now being widely recognised.

“Best practice among farmers must be maintained and those responsible for the distribution and application of pesticides must continue their efforts.
