Raz & Patricia Owen

Raz Owen, of Owen Owen (Western) Ltd on London’s Western International Market passed away on May 13 after a long battle against illness.

Raz, a veteran of the fruit trade, started his career with his family firm Owen Owen (Wigan) Ltd in 1953 after National Service.

Together with his father Owen Owen and uncle, Lesley Owen, he ran the business until it was sold to Louis Reece in 1969, continuing to head up Louis Reece (Northern) following their retirement.

During his career, Raz forged strong links with many suppliers worldwide, notably the CMBI in Israel, the New Zealand Apple & Pear Board and Outspan.

Following his retirement, in 1994 he established a consultancy business - the Raz Owen Partnership.

He was also instrumental in the formation of Owen Owen (Western) in 1998, led by his son, Andrew, in which he took a daily interest right up until his death.

Raz was an enthusiastic golfer, and a keen sportsman in general who had played rugby in his youth and enjoyed watching both rugby and cricket whenever possible.

Raz leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Patricia, and children Jane, Andrew and John, as well as many friends in the fruit trade.
