Spanish growers have started picking the summer (Verna) lemon crop in the hope they will fare better than with the autumn harvest of Fino lemons.
Prices for the new season fruit are already tracking slightly higher than at this point in the 2011 campaign, according to growers’ association Asaja Alicante. The organisation said in a statement that recent rainfall has benefited the crop in terms of eating quality and size and that it is also showing good colour. Problems with early season Argentinean fruit, which is starting later than usual may also help the Spaniards.
