A call for more support for local produce has been made by the Vegetarian Society.
The Society, which has been promoting National Vegetarian Week this week, has also thrown its support behind the launch of a new award celebrating the best farmers’ market for vegetarians.
Vegetarian Society chief executive, Annette Pinner, said: “With all the fruit and vegetables that vegetarians get through - we really are supporters of the farmers. But vegetarians can really make more of a difference by buying seasonal produce - ingredients will be fresher and therefore tastier.
“If produced locally, they will have less impact on the environment, thanks to reduced energy use and associated carbon dioxide emissions from their distribution. Most of all it’s a great way to support your local economy and help ensure farming communities thrive and prosper.”
