The Vegetarian Society is holding its 13th annual National Vegetarian Week on May 23-29 and is calling on the fresh produce sector to get behind the initiative. Last year’s event was a huge success with media coverage beating all previous records and circulation figures at almost 100 million.

The Mushroom Bureau backed the week in 2004 and retailers reported uplifts in sales. For example, Sainsbury’s organic Portabella mushrooms featured National Vegetarian Week stickers on packaging and sales saw a 15 per cent rise over the seven-day period.

Those interested in participating in this year’s initiative should visit www.vegsoc.org or e-mail nvw@vegsoc.org

The society is offering a free listing on its website and a free National Vegetarian Week business pack containing leaflets, posters and ideas for promotions and special offers to participating businesses.
