The trend highlighted in a press report this week that vegetable seeds sales to householders are outstripping those of flower seeds for the first time since World War II could be beneficial for the UK fresh produce industry.

A report in the Guardian on Monday stated that there has been “a huge rise in home-grown vegetables” as consumers have an “increasing distaste for factory food” and “industrially produced foods”.

The Fresh Produce Consortium’s Nigel Jenney said the sea-change in UK gardening habits can have a positive message for the trade. “It shows that there is an increasing interest on the part of UK consumers in the quality and provenance of the produce they consume. It encourages them to go back to their chosen retailer and complement their own range year-round.”
