Last week’s cold snap in Valencia has brought relief to citrus growers but is causing problems for producers of salads and sub-tropical lines.

Producers’ association Ava-Asaja welcomed the change in weather, following an unseasonable and extended period of rainfall in December, as it has improved the quality of the citrus.

However, some 800 hectares of artichokes have been damaged by the freezing temperatures which fell to -5°C in some low-lying areas of the eastern Spanish province.

The cold has also damaged some lettuce production and will slow down maturity in more resistant lines such as broccoli.

In the Granada area sub-tropical lines such as avocados has suffered from high winds and the cherimoya harvest has been virtually wiped out.
