The US department of agriculture is forecasting an apple crop some four per cent down on last season due to unfavourable spring weather in New York and Michigan. In Washington, early production estimates are for a crop about five per cent up on last year. This means it could be in line with the record-breaking crop of 2008. The state accounts for 60 per cent of total US apple output. In California, output is likely to rise 17 per cent on 2009 due to low pest and disease pressure and quality is reported to be very good.
