US watermelons could soon be making their way to UK with a push from the National Watermelon Promotion Board.
The supplies would fill a gap in the market between the end of the Spanish season in late September and when Brazil comes on stream in volume, in November.
Neil Gordon, retail merchandiser from the association, told FPJ: “We are trying to introduce consumers to the idea of US watermelon and show them the many ways in which it can be used. We are in talks with importers and we were hoping to start exports to the UK this season, but now we are planning to start next year.
“We think US watermelon will fill a gap in the market.”
The US industry will target the UK with smaller-sized and seedless varieties as well as yellow-fleshed types.
