Uruguay will start sending citrus to the US after an agreement was signed between both countries to come into effect on 9 August.
Negotiations have been ongoing for some 20 years and will now see Uruguayan lemons, oranges, mandarins, kumquats and citrus hybrids gain access to the lucrative market.
This decision will mean the South American nation will send some $20 million worth of citrus to the US. It comes following orchard visits by the relevant authorities and a subsequent revision to US plant health regulations earlier this year.
Julissa Reynoso, US ambassador to Uruguay said: “This is a hugely important step in the commercial relationship between both countries.”
