Belgium-based fresh produce giant Univeg has announced a shake-up of its operations in Argentina - a major source of imported product for the group - following a series of reports in the press casting doubt over the viability of some of its production in the country.
In a press release, Univeg said it had already begun to implement a new strategic plan, which it said would further grow its business activities in Argentina, where its subsidiary Expofrut is the country's largest supplier of fresh apples.
"For the employees, customers and suppliers, there are no changes to the way business is being done," the group insisted.
"This plan reflects the great importance the Argentinean operation - Expofrut - has within the Univeg group and focuses on generating value for its customers."
Details of the strategic plan, which are understood to include replanting and upgrading some orchards as well as selling assets like packhouses that are no longer in use, were outlined to the company's employees in Argentina on 6 August.
